National Novel Writing Month [Nov '09]
http://nanowrimo.org Okay, so this pretty much has nothing to do with anything, but I discovered this site over the holidays, and it's been stewing in the back of my head since then. Basically, every November, anyone who wants to commits to writing 50, 000 words of fiction in thirty days. As writers, I thought some of you might be interested - and as a weak, feeble sort of person, I knew that I wouldn't stick to it if I had to do it alone. If any of you suddenly had little voices erupt into your head saying, 'no way, I can't do that', just now, think about this - how many words do all of you churn out in a month just by posting on this site? I'm going to guess it's a helluva lot, and personally I'm going to start counting. I know that every single one of you is capable of 50k in thirty days, and I'm not just saying that as an admin trying to motivate you. Keep in mind that this event is all about quantity not quality - if nothing else, it'll be a good exercise for us nitpicky little souls who grammar and spell-check everything to death. The website explains things a lot better, so I'll just let you all read that. I suppose my point is that I'm going to attempt it this year, even if none of you decide to do it (although I would appreciate the company). By posting this I'm basically signing a contract to myself stating that I'm going to try. Hell, I've got about nine months to get a plot outline, and then I've got thirty days to write as much crap as I want. Hopefully role-playing won't suffer too much. No, not really x3 I want it to be melancholy, and dark-ish. But maybe that's just a stage I'm going through or something - I could read this in November and think, 'dark, what the hell?' I don't really want to commit to an idea just yet ... But I might draw up a few plotlines, or read some how-to-write-a-novel books or something.
I guess the first thing I want to find out is whether to 'write what I know', or not. I mean, writing what I know is all very well - but I'm not sure if I could really come up with an original idea. I'm afraid some bits of all the fiction novels I've read will start to creep in .___o And Stephenie Meyer apparently wasn't into vampires much when she wrote Twilight; and that was her first novel, too. So not only did she not know what it was like to actually write a book, she didn't know about typical vampire attributes, so she figured it out as she went along. I think that might be a good idea; the whole writing a novel in a month thing is about experimenting anyway. But I also don't want to have a crappy plot that will need to be to scrapped halfway through. x3

I think coming up with a good plot idea is the hardest thing to do. I mean, if you can come up with one the writing is easy, it flows naturally and before you know it it's done. The characters, the scenery, all of that is a piece of cake if you have your direction.

Indeed. :3 It's a long way off, so I'm sure that'll be time enough to think of something ... As long as we make sure to remember by then. I'm mildly afraid of joining this early and forgetting about it.
And the founder of the project wrote a book about writing a novel in thirty days - No Plot? No Problem! I would like to read it very much, and will be hunting it down the next time I travel to a bookstore. He claims that you don't need a plot, and that characters and setting are more important ... I think I sort of see his point, but I also think that if you know where it's going, it's easier to get there, and then you can add stuff in between and describe little details to get your word count up x3 But I guess he would know.

I'm going to try too... Mrahaha. If I only need characters and a setting (as that person claims) then this shall be easy...ish. Easier, I should say, then if I had to organise a plot too.

I don't think so. I don't know about you, but I'm probably going to need until November to prepare for this. I want my characters to be solid, and a fairly detailed outline to follow before I attempt to write 50,000 words.

I was going to wait till November too, unless you guys wanted to do something as a site before that? It doesn't have to be 50k

That actually sounds pretty good. We could do like 20,000 words for February; it would be a nice way to ease into it, and it would be fun. The problem would be where to upload it. Just on the site, maybe? In a special board?

Do you think we should do February or wait until later? If we wait too long it will cut into planning time for the big November one, but February is only twelve days away.
Ho hum.
